I scored famous Rangers cup final winner against Celtic and am proud of learning Scottish slang through STILL GAME
Ex Rangers hero Peter Lovenkrands has revealed how he learned Scottish slang by watching the cult comedy sitcom Still Game.
The Dane moved to Ibrox in 2000 from AB and spent six years with the Light Blues with his most memorable moment coming at Hampden when he headed home a dramatic last-gasp Scottish Cup final winner against Celtic. Lovenkrands, who also played for Newcastle United and was capped 22 times for his country, is now a youth coach with Aalborg and as he reflected on his time in Scotland he said: “I spoke very good English but it took my easily four years to understand our kitman Jimmy Bell.
"I think he did it on purpose to be fair! I took big pride in learning Scottish slang though and I watched a TV show called Still Game. I loved coming into training quoting some of those lines which they found hilarious, but that is why I got a Scottish accent! Plus my wife is Scottish too!
“I was actually a Rangers fan growing up. My mum and dad use to fly over to watch Brian Laudrup and Paul Gascoigne. Laudrup was one of my heroes, so I always followed them. My dad used to always say ‘I want you to play for Rangers’.
"I would tell him I wanted to play in La Liga, but I ended up playing there for six years. But as a family, we were Rangers fans. I had six fantastic years at Rangers and it helped that two weeks before I signed, my brother had signed for St Johnstone so I had him there for the first three years and it really helped me settle in. It was also a big factor on why I went there.
“I have so many highlights from my time at Rangers. One was being able to be play my first Champions League game against Galatasaray. Standing on the line and hearing the Champions League music gives me goosebumps even now,
