Rangers: 72-goal star 'would find it hard' to snub Ibrox move

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has added Ross Stewart to his list of transfer targets and the Sunderland frontman will struggle to turn down a move to Ibrox, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Gers may still be celebrating after reaching the Europa League final by overcoming RB Leipzig on Thursday, but it appears van Bronckhorst is already putting plans in place ahead of the summer window.

Van Bronckhorst was appointed as Rangers’ chief last November and, ahead of his first full season at the helm, it appears he wants to lure Stewart to Ibrox.

According to the Northern Echo, the Glasgow giants are in a race to sign Sunderland star Stewart when the transfer window reopens.

The report suggests Norwich City and Swansea City are also showing an interest in the 6 ft 2 Scotsman, while Black Cats boss Alex Neil has raised doubts that Stewart will look to force a move away from the Stadium of Light.

However, Sunderland are not necessarily in the strongest of negotiating positions as Stewart is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract in the summer, meaning Rangers could see the upcoming transfer window as the perfect opportunity to pounce.

Despite the uncertainty over the 25-year-old’s long-term future, Stewart’s former Ross County manager Stuart Kettlewell has claimed Rangers could still have to pay as much as £5million in order to get their man.

O’Rourke understands Rangers are among Stewart’s suitors ahead of the reopening of the transfer window.
