Ramsgate manager Jamie Coyle warns his side to tighten up defensively as Isthmian South East title race reaches crunch time

Jamie Coyle has urged Ramsgate to stop giving away silly goals - or risk damaging their promotion chances.

Rams remain unbeaten since Coyle succeeded Steve Lovell as manager but there’s been too many draws for his liking.

They were held for the fourth time in seven games on Saturday, with their trip to Lancing ending 1-1.

Jack Paxman equalised as Rams battled back from Ashley Mutongerwa’s soft opener but the visitors couldn’t force a winner and saw their lead at the top of Isthmian South East cut to two points.

“It’s great to be unbeaten but we’ve got to turn these draws into wins,” said Coyle, who could return from injury along with Ben Fitchett when Rams host East Grinstead this Saturday (3pm).

“It’s crunch time, really, and although it’s great in terms of coming back in games, it would be nice to be in front and controlling games.

“We’ve got this knack at the moment of conceding some of the softest goals I’ve ever seen.

“All season we’ve been really solid and reliable defensively but we’ve started giving ourselves a mountain to climb because we’re conceding really poor goals through individual mistakes.

“We’re having to work hard to get back into games.

“If we were more reliable as a team, not just the defenders, we’d be in a much better position than we are now because we’re constantly asking questions and creating chances.

“All the time we’re giving a leg up to the opposition, it gives them impetus and extra motivation.

“Saturday was a terrible goal to concede and it’s been the story of the last few games, where we’ve had control for large spells but we’re making some bad decisions that are costing us.
