Ramadan 2023 LIVE updates for start time and moon sighting announcements

Ramadan is right around the corner and many institutions will be keeping an eye on the moon tonight to determine when the month starts.

The Islamic holy month will start when the crescent of the new moon is sighted. The holiday will see Muslims all over the globe observe a fast from sunrise to sunset while attending special prayers at their local mosques.

Saudi Arabia has announced that it will start the first day of Ramadan on Thursday, March 23, with many other nations following suit. In the UK, Didsbury Mosque has similarly announced that Ramadan will start this Thursday.

Because of this, it is understood that Ramadan will thus end on Friday, April 21, marking one of Islam's biggest holidays, Eid al-Fitr.

Match Officials for the Premier League have been issued guidance from refereeing bodies to allow a pause in play during Ramadan so Muslim players can break their fast with liquids, energy gels, or supplements.

Some of the top Muslim Premier League players include Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, Chelsea's Hakim Ziyech, and Manchester City's Riyad Mahrez. In 2021, a Leicester City V Crystal Palace match was briefly paused after half an hour so Wesley Fofana and Cheikhou Kouyate could break their fast once the sun set.
