Ralf Rangnick 'in discussions' for first club management role after Man United exit

Former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick could be in line for a shock return to club football, almost two years after leaving Old Trafford.

The 65-year-old spent six months in charge of United in the 2021/22 season. He left in the summer of 2022 with Erik ten Hag taking over the role, with a planned consultancy role after his spell in the dugout ended canned.

Rangnick quickly got back into management taking over as manager of the Austria national team the same summer. He led them to qualification for this summer’s European Championships but could cut his time in national football short to return to club management.

According to Sky Germany, Rangnick has 'held discussions' with German giants Bayern Munich about becoming the club’s new head coach when Thomas Tuchel leaves at the end of the season. The report adds that Rangnick and Brighton and Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi are the ‘top two candidates’ for the job.

More reports in Germany from TZ, via the Sun, claim that Rangnick is now the new favourite to take over at the Allianz Arena and could potentially complete a deal this week to take over after the European Championships. The news comes after reported top target Julian Nagelsmann committed his future to the German national team this week by signing a new contract.

Rangnick didn't have the best of times at Old Trafford, during his time at the club he took charge of 29 games, winning 11, drawing nine, and losing the other nine. Back in April last year he admitted that
