Ralf Rangnick has left Manchester United legacy that might worry the Glazers

Before he had even had the opportunity to start his new role, Ralf Rangnick's tenure as a Manchester United consultant is over.

It was announced on Sunday afternoon that the German had made the decision to part company with United and will instead solely focus on his job with the Austrian national team. He was set to juggle both positions, offering a helping hand to United and new manager Erik ten Hag ahead of the new era springing into life.

Instead, Ten Hag will go it alone, even if he did not seem overly fussed about Rangnick's support being in place when quizzed on the latter's consultancy position at his first Old Trafford press conference last Monday, issuing a fairly lifeless answer that amounted to just five words. "That is on the club," he said.

Although the specifics of Rangnick's consultancy position — which was United's bargaining tool in convincing him to take over as interim manager back in November — were never disclosed, you got the feeling that it would have featured a big emphasis on recruitment and putting the right building blocks in place for the club to compete with Liverpool and Manchester City at the top end of the table in years to come. Now, we'll never know.

Rangnick, even before he had been introduced to United, had identified fundamental flaws in their recruitment over the last few years. He called the club out for their mistakes since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

"Since Sir Alex left they were underperforming," said Rangnick, speaking back in 2019. "They haven’t won the title since he left.
