Ralf Rangnick has final chance to alter his Manchester United legacy

There was a breath of fresh air around Manchester United when Ralf Rangnick arrived as interim manager last November.

United's season was all but over after a dreadful start under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and supporters needed a lift to convince themselves that good times were still on the horizon.

Rangnick had plenty of popularity online, mainly down to his recruitment success as part of the Red Bull group, and although he hadn't managed for two years, supporters were just happy to have someone with modern ideas arrive at the club.

The German coach has always received somewhat of a free hit given his role was only ever that of an interim, but the cold truth is that he has now taken charge of 28 games this season and failed to make them any better.

Whatever the result on Sunday afternoon, he will leave with the lowest win rate of any United manager in Premier League history (currently 43.5% - 10 wins from 23 games). No other elite team would ever have hired him for such a role on such a long-term basis, and as he approaches his final match as interim manager, he can't be immune from criticism.

It is true that Rangnick has had a lot to deal with during his time at the club. There has been the Mason Greenwood situation, dressing room unrest and a plethora of unhappy players looking to leave the club, but ultimately his core fundamentals as a manager haven't been good enough either.

"I think that until we dropped out at Atletico, we have lost confidence and energy in the team," Rangnick reflected in his final press conference. "Until then, we had stabilised the team. We were much more stable defensively.
