Pundit reveals why Hull City were lucky in defeat to Huddersfield Town

Tom Eaves was fortunate to not be sent off for the challenge which saw him pick up the first of two yellow cards on Friday night against Huddersfield Town, that’s according to former promotion-winning captain and Sky Sports pundit Jobi McAnuff.

Eaves was cautioned early on for a rash lunge on Chelsea loanee Levi Colwill by referee Jeremy Simpson, he then picked up just his second sending off in his 12-year career on the stroke of half-time when he chased down Aiden O’Brien before clipping his ankles and being sent off.

The game was finely poised at that point with the score goalless at the MKM Stadium with City subsequently spending much of the second half with their backs to the wall against a Huddersfield side gunning for a first win in four to reignite their promotion challenge, and the winner came just over 10 minutes from time when Harry Toffolo tapped in at the back post.

Despite seeing substitute Allahyar Sayyadmanesh go close with a header in stoppage time, City fell to a sixth straight home defeat for the first time since 1992, and McAnuff described how frustrated boss Shota Arveladze will have been with the only Tigers man to net in that dreadful home run.

“He’ll know that sometimes you get a yellow that you don’t think is a yellow or a red (that you don’t think is),” McAnuff told Sky Sports. “But that is more than a yellow and he’s fairly fortunate that it wasn’t anymore and again, having got yourself in that situation to start with, what you cannot do – and this is where from a managerial point of view, it’s so frustrating because you’re trusting your players – you have 20 seconds before half-time comes, and to make that challenge – both blatant, at least bookings in the situation they’re in.
