PSV boss lands new job ahead of crunch Leicester City clash

PSV manager Roger Schmidt is set to become the next manager of Benfica, according to reports.

The news has emerged just days before his side are due to host Leicester City in the second leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final tie. The teams will meet in Eindhoven on Thursday in what is set to be one of Schmidt's last games in charge.

It had already emerged that Schmidt would be leaving PSV, with former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy set to replace him from the end of the season. While rumours circulated about Schmidt's future, we now have reports on his next step.

According to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Schmidt is in the "final stages" of an agreement with Benfica to become their new manager. It would see him leave PSV to join the Portuguese side until June 2024.

Romano tweeted: "Roger Schmidt will sign until June 2024 as new Benfica manager in the coming weeks. The agreement is at final stages, set to be completed soon. Schmidt is now focused on PSV Eindhoven but he'll the man to re-start Benfica project."

PSV have also suffered an injury blow ahead of this week's European clash, with English winger Noni Madueke understood to be a doubt for the game. He is said to be on Leicester's radar, with Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard also watching him last week.
