PSG consider Jose Mourinho as new head coach

Paris Saint-Germain are considering a surprise move to make Jose Mourinho their new head coach.

Mourinho has just won the fledgeling Europa Conference League with Roma and has two more years left on his contract with the Italian club.

PSG are currently working through the options should they, as expected, sack Mauricio Pochettino. A decision is expected in the next few days with Pochettino expected to go.

PSG have long targeted former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane to succeed Pochettino but, despite their efforts, he has remained reluctant to join the French giants. There is an expectation that Zidane will take over as France coach after the World Cup later this year when Didier Deschamps steps down.

Mourinho has been strongly linked with PSG in the past but the arrival of Luis Campos, who is taking over from Leonardo, has led to a revived interest. Campos may not take the title of sporting director but will drive the project and has firstly been tasked with identifying a new coach.

Campos worked closely with Mourinho at Real Madrid and the pair have remained friends. Mourinho recommended his fellow Portuguese to Manchester United as their sporting director when he was the club’s manager. There was also talk of Campos reuniting with Mourinho at Tottenham Hotspur where, of course, he succeeded Pochettino in November 2019.

PSG’s interest in Mourinho, however, goes far beyond his relationship with Campos with the club’s Qatari owners reasoning that his record in European football – he has become the first coach to win all three club trophies – will strengthen their chances of finally winning the Champions League.
