PS Plus: Game trials vary in length

Sony’s updated PlayStation Plus service is now live in Asia and we’re subsequently getting more and more snippets of information about what is on offer.

There are a variety of new and classic games that are available to play if you’re a subscriber, but one innovative feature is the addition of game trials.

These are essentially demos that give players the chance to spend some time in newly released games before committing to a purchase.

And it now appears that these game trials actually vary in length, as opposed to taking a one size fits all approach.

PSVortex on Twitter has taken some time to comb through the store and has noted that some games have longer trials than others.

Horizon Forbidden West, for example, has a five-hour game trial, that will give you five hours in the full game. Of course, any progress made during those five hours are then carried over if you decide to make a purchase.

Cyberpunk 2077 also has a five-hour full game trial, letting players loose in the world of Night City.

WWE 2K22, by comparison, has a two-hour full game trial, as does Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection.

That makes sense on paper. Both Horizon and Cyberpunk are huge, single-player games that offer a great deal of freedom within the world, so five hours of gameplay may not make a significant dent in the game overall.

WWE, by comparison, has a relatively simple story mode, while Uncharted is a much-shorter narrative-driven release. Giving players two hours in each would seem to be enough on the surface.

It will be interesting to see if the lengths of trials change as more and more games are released onto the PS Storefront, but we will have to wait and see.
