Proteas look to 'go out with an aggressive mindset' with England series defeat looming

The situation is dire as South Africa is on the cusp of suffering a crushing Test series defeat in the third and final Test against England at The Oval.

England requires a mere 33 runs to win with 10 wickets in hand on Day 5 as the hosts look to seal the three-match series 2-1 on Monday.

After restricting England to 158 thanks to Proteas all-rounder Marco Jansen's Test-best five for 35, South Africa's batting order collapsed from 54-0 to 169 all out.

England needed only a total of 130 to win and a few missed opportunities in the field gave openers Zak Crawley and Alex Lees firm control.

Jansen, who dropped Crawley on the first delivery off Kagiso Rabada, admits that the side is on the back foot and hopes they can take some wickets on the final day.

"Obviously, we're in a difficult situation. The plan in the second innings was just to keep it as tight as possible," Jansen told reporters on Sunday.

"We tried to dry up the runs and take wickets, but they came with a positive intent and they played well as well. Hopefully, tomorrow we can make something out of it.

"We're on the back foot, but the plan is to go and take wickets. It's not a case of restricting them tomorrow. We want to go out with an aggressive mindset that's still within our gameplan," he said.

"We want to take wickets by tempting them to drive and nick a few balls. We'll chat about it tonight, but I feel we have to take wickets as they need to get 30-odd runs."

The Proteas have been out of sorts the last two Tests, with Jansen stating that a lot of work continues to be done behind the scenes.
