Promising update for Tottenham emerges in transfer race for West Brom star as likely role at Spurs becomes clearer

Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur are becoming more confident that they can secure a deal for West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to a report from The Sun.

The 29-year-old has been one of the first names on the teamsheet for the Baggies in the second tier this term after standing out in the Premier League last season, proving to be vital again once again at times during the 2021/22 campaign.

Also having three England caps under his belt, he hasn’t been short of interest in the last 12 months with previous boss Valerien Ismael resigned to losing him last summer.

However, the only reported approach that was made for the shot-stopper was by West Ham United, with their £6m bid being rejected in mid-July as the West Midlands outfit’s board placed a £20m price tag on one of their valuable assets.

But his contract at The Hawthorns expires in the summer and with this, he’s likely to have plenty of offers in just a few months with Johnstone seemingly no nearer to signing fresh terms at his current side, who look set to remain in the second tier beyond this campaign.

Spurs, Manchester United, West Ham, Southampton and Newcastle United are all thought to be monitoring his current situation ahead of a potential approach at the end of the season.

According to the same report from The Sun, Johnstone would be a backup option to Hugo Lloris at first but with a view to potentially becoming number one when the previous World Cup winner departs north London.

The Verdict:

This wouldn’t be a good move for the 29-year-old if he was to only be a backup keeper – because he should be a regular at his age and it would almost be a waste if he didn’t start every week for a club.
