Premier League make controversial Arsenal vs Man United referee decision as selection confirmed

The Premier League have confirmed that referee Sam Barrott will take charge of Manchester United's visit to Arsenal on Wednesday night. The official has looked after one game per team so far this season.

Arsenal were victorious 4-2 against Leicester with Barrott the man in the middle whilst United overcame Brentford 2-1 just over three weeks later. Barrott wasn't picked for main refereeing duties over the past weekend.

He is currently averaging over six yellow cards per fixture but has only awarded two penalties with both coming in Liverpool's 3-2 win over Southampton last weekend. It is his support on VAR that has generated most attention, though.

Named as the main VAR official, Australian Jarred Gillett is under the microscope. Not only has he been stationed on four games already this term set to become five from 14 Premier League games when things kick off at the Emirates Stadium - but he is also allegedly a Liverpool fan.

This is of increased importance now with Arsenal the closest rival to Arne Slot at the top of the table. Although still nine points behind, the Gunners are currently in a better position to challenge compared top Manchester City.

Gillett, though, has become somewhat of an enemy for Arsenal supporters. It all stems from a claim made by Fox Sports commentator Brenton Speed.
