Power off pace as Bale makes debut at Pebble Beach Pro-am

Seamus Power sits eight strokes off the pace after the opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, led by America's Hank Lebioda after day one at the Monterrey Peninsula.

The tournament operates similarly to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the PGA Tour, played across the three famous courses on the peninsula, Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterrey Peninsula CC.

Playing in Spyglass, Power had to make do with an even par round of 72, which included a ghastly triple bogey 8 on the par-5 14th. It marred what was an otherwise fine back nine for Power who rolled in four birdies at 10, 11, 15 and 17. Unfortunately, a closing bogey followed at the 18th.

The Waterford man bookended his round with bogeys, dropping strokes at the 1st and 6th before birdies at 7 and 9 helped him reach the turn in even par.

Lebioda holds sole possession of the lead following an eight-under par round of 63 at Monterrey, decorated by a birdie streak on the back nine.

He leads by one stroke from compatriots Kurt Kitayama and Chad Ramey, while England's Harry Hall is also part of the ground on seven under par.

Former Wales and Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale admits he had first-tee nerves on his debut. The 33-year-old, who announced his retirement from football last month, is a two-handicapper and his love of golf while playing for the LaLiga giants was well documented. But even he felt the pressure as he made his first appearance at the PGA Tour event, also starting at the Spyglass Hill course.

"I think every amateur will tell you that. Even if we are used to playing in front of 80,000 or more on live TV it's a completely different sport," he said after his round.

"It's good experience but luckily I hit one of my best shots down the first
