'Possible gunshots' on street being investigated by police

Police have launched an investigation after 'possible gunshots' were reported on a residential street. Officers were called out to Dorac Avenue in Heald Green, Stockport, shortly after midnight this morning (Thursday).

A cordon was in place for several hours earlier today as police looked for evidence, with enquiries to establish whether gunshots were fired still ongoing. Greater Manchester Police said no injuries were reported and no arrests have been made.

Residents on Dorac Avenue watched on with uncertainty as police investigated the scene. The Manchester Evening News understands a van which appeared to have a shattered windscreen was parked inside the cordon, with neighbours told it formed part of the investigation.

"The road was cordoned off from 1am. They said they would be there until between 4pm and 5pm, but I just heard one of my neighbours shout 'freedom at last' [at 1pm]. We've not been able to get in or out."

In a statement issued this evening (Thursday), a spokesperson for GMP said: “Officers were called at around 12:05am this morning (Thursday, July 7 2022) to reports of possible gunshots in Heald Green, Cheadle. The incident took place on Dorac Avenue in Heald Green; specialist officers attended the scene, and a cordon was put in place.

"Officers conducted initial enquiries at the scene and an investigation is now in place. The cordon has since been lifted around 1:00pm today.
