Popular UK tourist destination is 'dangerous for Brits', MP warns

A popular UK tourist destination has been branded 'not a safe place for British tourists' by one MP.

Writing in The Telegraph, Conservative MP for Northampton North, Sir Michael Ellis warned South Africa has an 'out of control' crime rate and is moving 'towards the axis of Putin's Russia and the master terrorists who rule in Iran'.

It comes after South Africa participated in a 10-day joint naval exercise with the Russian and Chinese Naval fleets in the Indian Ocean in February 2023. Sir Ellis said any Brits planning a trip to the country should at least make sure their travel insurance is up to date, reports BirminghamLive.

He told the Telegraph: "South Africa is clearly not currently a safe place for British tourists. It is on a desperately spiralling path, socially, economically and politically and it should not be a holiday destination for British tourists now or indeed for the foreseeable future.

"Anyone planning to holiday in South Africa right now should, at the very least, ensure their travel insurance is up to date." Tory MP Andrew Percy has also recently stood up in the House of Commons to raise questions with the Foreign Office about the safety of Jewish people in South Africa and the adequacy of FCDO travel advice to Brits contemplating travelling there.

South Africa has submitted an "urgent request" to The Hague to consider if Israel's operations targeting Rafah are a breach of court orders. "The South African government said it was gravely concerned that the unprecedented military offensive against Rafah... has already led to and will result in further large-scale killing," a statement issued by South Africa's presidency said.
