Popular former Folkestone Invicta midfielder Ronnie Dolan, 34, becomes the manager of Isthmian South East side Hastings United

A popular former Folkestone midfielder has made a surprise move into management.

Ronnie Dolan, 34, has taken charge of Isthmian South East Hastings United, replacing David Altendorff, who had quit.

Dolan previously has played for the East Sussex side but is more well-known as an Invicta player, having first joined from Hastings in 2014.

He made more than 300 club appearances, largely under legendary boss Neil Cugley, and helped them win the Ryman League Division 1 South title a decade ago before Dolan departed in 2023.

Dolan, who has also played alongside younger brother Robbie, spent time at Lydd, only to make a Cheriton Road comeback last summer.

He helped Jay Saunders’ side claim the 2025/26 Isthmian Premier title - and even was awarded goal-of-the-season for his late effort in a 3-0 home win against Chichester in November.

Dolan left Folkestone again this month - although believes the success he enjoyed has shown him how to create a successful environment at The Pilot Field.

“It’s a huge honour to become manager of Hastings United,” said Dolan following confirmation of his appointment on Friday. “This is a club with fantastic support, real history and a fan-base that cares deeply about its football club.

“Living in the area - and having previously played for the club - I understand what Hastings United means to people, and that’s something I don’t take lightly.

“My experiences winning titles with Folkestone Invicta showed me the standards, togetherness and culture needed to be successful, and those are values I want to bring here.
