Poll: David Turnbull or Reo Hatate - who starts for Celtic next season?
Celtic’s midfield next season will look different to the midfield which helped the Hoops win the league in 2021/22, that is due to the exits of Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton, two players that have been mainstays of the Celtic side for many years.
Football goes on though, and Celtic still have a strong midfield despite the departures of the duo. Callum McGregor is the most important player in the side, and Matt O’Riley has established himself as a key man in his short time at the club.
Then there is the duo of David Turnbull and Reo Hatate. Both players were important players for the Hoops at different stages of last season. Turnbull in the first-half of the season before he got injured, and Hatate in the second-half after he joined the Hoops in the January transfer window.
So far neither player has enjoyed a run in the Celtic team together, and they are perhaps too similar as players for that to happen, which begs the question, which player will be featured more regularly for the Hoops next season?
You have to imagine that both players will feature most weeks for the Hoops, even if Celtic buy another midfielder in the summer transfer market to replace either Bitton or Rogic.
Turnbull was an ever present in the Celtic side before his injury in December, and he was on the bench most weeks when he returned to the side. Hatate started most games for the Bhoys after joining the club, but he seemed exhausted by the end of the season after playing so much football in Japan before moving to Glasgow.
The good news for Ange Postecoglou is that both players should be fit and raring to go for the Bhoys when the new season starts at the end of July.
It will be interesting to see if Postecoglou experiments with playing both Turnbull and
