Police powers stepped up after gang of armed youths smash up property

Stop-and-search powers have been stepped up in an area of Wigan after a gang of armed youths smashed up property and 'made threats of violence'.

Officers were called to the Platt Bridge area last night (Wednesday) after the group, who were all wearing balaclavas, caused 'extensive damage to property' in the area. This followed three other 'incidents of violence' in the same area on Tuesday, police said.

At around 12.30am this morning, officers announced a Section 60 power for an area in Platt Bridge until 7am today. It came into force at 10pm last night.

The Section 60 power gives police the power to stop-and-search anyone within the area. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "GMP understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern to residents, however, the use of these powers is only authorised when it is proportionate and necessary.

"Officers out and about will continue to do all they can to keep you safe and will be on hand to offer any reassurance. Extra uniformed and non-uniformed officers have been deployed to the areas to support the community."
