Police issue update after Greater Manchester road closed for hours following crash

Police have issued an update after a Trafford road was closed off for several hours following a one-car crash. Emergency services were called out to Wellington Road, in Timperley, at around 4.15am on Monday (December 9).

It followed a collision involving a grey Volkswagen Scirocco which was seen with damage to its front bumper, windscreen and roof. Officers and firefighters were called out to the scene, while the road was taped off throughout Monday morning.

The incident was initially being investigated by Greater Manchester Police as a serious collision. In an update issued this morning (Tuesday), GMP said a male casualty was taken to hospital for treatment after suffering a head injury following the crash.

His injuries are not as serious as first thought, according to GMP. His age has not been confirmed. The incident is being investigated by GMP's road policing unit and no arrests have been made.

GMP says the collision did not follow a police pursuit. Multiple police cars were seen in attendance on Wellington Road on Monday morning.

Debris could be seen strewn on the road following the crash, including damaged wheelie bins. Pedestrians were reportedly turned away from the scene while the road was also closed off to traffic.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: "Around 4.15am on Monday, December 9, one fire engine from Altrincham fire station was called to attend a crash involving one car on Wellington Road, Timperley. Crews arrived quickly to make the vehicle safe before departing the scene after approximately 17 minutes in attendance.”
