Police identify woman who died near the M56 after appeals to find loved ones

Police have identified a woman who died near the M56 following multiple appeals to find her loved ones.

The woman's body was found near a bridge near junction five of the motorway at around 2:40am in the early hours of Monday, July 31. Police were initially called to 'reports of concern for her welfare'.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, she sadly died. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said her death is not being treated as suspicious.

Officers issued multiple appeals in a bid to find her next of kin and identify her. They released pictures of her distinctive jewellery and some belongings she had with her at the time in the hope of finding her family.

Police previously said the woman was believed to be aged in her 40s, 50s or 60s. In an update issued this morning (Wednesday), officers said she has now been identified.

The update shared on social media said: "#UPDATE | The woman who sadly died near the M56 on 31 July has now been identified, and the appropriate arrangements are now being made. Thank you very much to everyone who shared our appeal."
