Police cordon off Market Street and tram stop after 'incident' in Manchester city centre

A section of Market Street in Manchester city was cordoned off tonight following a police incident. Police and paramedics were dispatched to the city centre following the incident at the Market Street tram stop.

Eye-witnesses reported paramedics and police officers in front of a stationary tram at the tram stop. One end of Market Street close to Piccadilly Gardens remained cordoned off tonight.

Metrolink confirmed services had been disrupted due to a police incident.

Pictures from the scene showed a paramedic car, an ambulance and a number of police vehicles at the scene. The ambulance left the scene followed a short while later by the tram, according to one eye-witness.

They described how a cordon remained in place and that nobody was being allowed through the top end of Market Street.

Metrolink, in an update on its website, announced that services on the Ashton line had been disrupted due to a 'police incident'.

The update continued: "Ashton services will operate between Ashton and Piccadilly Station ONLY. No services are currently operating between Piccadilly Station and Victoria Station. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Greater Manchester Police has been approached for a comment.
