Playground evacuated after 'aggressive' dog attacks owner

A playground was evacuated after a 'large' and 'aggressive' bulldog ran wild and bit its owner.

Police called in a number of animal experts, including vets and local zoos, to bring the animal under control. They managed to bring the 50kg American bulldog under control in a high fenced area of the park, before sedating it and moving it to a kennel.

The owner was left with 'bite mark' injuries. Nobody else was injured during the incident, according to North Yorkshire Police. The dog was later euthanised with the agreement of the owner.

In a statement, the force said: "Police were called to Thorpe Willoughby at around 10.26am on 30 May 2023 to a report of a large, aggressive dog that was biting its owner.

"The dog was eventually contained in a high fenced area of a local park and the park was evacuated.

"Officers contacted a number of animal experts including veterinary practices, the RSPCA, local zoos and wildlife park to request assistance with bringing the dog safely under control.

"The dog, described as an American bull dog and weighing around 50 kilogrammes, was eventually sedated by a vet and safely moved to a kennel.

"No-one, other than the owner of the dog, was injured during the incident. Their injuries are described as bite marks.

"Officers have thanked everyone who assisted in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion. With the agreement of the owner, and after taking veterinary advice and assessing the risk to all involved, the dog was euthanised by a vet."
