A child and father dead, and many more seriously hurt... why Greater Manchester is seeing so many horrific dog attacks

Two tragedies just a year apart. The death of a 'happy' three-year-old boy, and a loving dad, who both suffered catastrophic injuries after being mauled by dogs.

Daniel Twigg, described as a 'caring little boy' who 'loved animals,' was attacked by a dog outside a property on Carr Lane in Milnrow, Rochdale on May 15 last year. He was rushed to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest, but sadly died a short time later.

A Cane Corso dog was destroyed at the scene of the tragedy, and ten other dogs were seized by police. None of the animals were banned breeds, an inquest opening previously heard.

Police previously arrested a 48-year-old man under the Dangerous Dogs Act in connection with the horrific incident, before he was released on bail. In an update this week, GMP confirmed their investigation is still ongoing.

Last Friday (May 19), tragedy struck again. This time in Leigh, where 37-year-old father Jonathan Hogg suffered fatal injuries after he was attacked by a dog, believed to be an XL bully type.

The dog, that police said was 'dangerously out of control' was later shot dead by armed police. Jonathan was rushed to hospital with serious injuries from the scene on Westleigh Lane but died the following day.

Police searched the house and seized a further 15 dogs, believed to be of the same breed. A man and a woman arrested in connection with the incident have since been bailed pending investigation.

In the past twelve months, the M.E.N has also reported on at least four other serious dog attacks across the region - with victims including a six-year-old girl.
