Plans for new apartment block at Tesco car park scaled back following feedback

Plans to build an apartment block in a Tesco car park have been scaled back. A planning application to build the flats in a section of the superstore's car park off Parrs Wood Lane in East Didsbury has now been formally lodged.

The proposed development dubbed Blackbird Yard now features 75 flats, down from 95, in a six-storey block – one floor fewer than first proposed. It follows feedback from residents who took part in a public consultation.

In response to the concerns raised by the local community, an extra nine parking spaces have also been included in the plans, up from an initial 27. Developer Dandara Living promises to create 'high quality homes' in a 'sustainable development' that 'positively contributes to the local area'.

Planning director Rachel Allwood said: "We’ve undertaken consultation with the local community and have adapted our proposals in response. This has seen us increase parking provision on site and the number of replacement trees whilst softening the proposed landscaping.

"We’ve also reduced the height of the development and number of apartments to ensure the building will sit comfortably alongside existing buildings in the area. At the same time we have retained our commitment to on-site affordable housing provision, and community space on the ground floor."

Of the 75 new apartments, more than half would have two bedrooms, a third would have one bedroom and the remaining 10 would have three bedrooms. All the new homes would be available to rent on long-term assured tenancies managed by Dandara Living and a fifth will be 'affordable' private rent flats.
