Plan submitted for second 'co-living' tower in Salford

A ‘ landmark’ ten-storey co-living tower with 97 homes is being planned in Salford.

CCL Media City Ltd has submitted a planning application for the building based on the corner of South Langworthy Road and Eccles New Road, next to Langworthy Metrolink stop.

The land is currently used by the empty Hollywood office building which would be demolished as part of the scheme if it is approved.

The scheme follows a previous planning application which related to a wider site in the area which was refused by the council in August 2023 for not providing ‘acceptable’ levels of amenities and ‘failing to respect the character of the local area’ with the design.

The developer says these issues have been addressed in the amended plans.

Planning documents say the co-living lifestyle is aimed at students or professionals aged between 18 and 30 who want a private apartment with shared living and dining spaces on every floor.

Salford’s first co-living tower was approved by the council in September, but some councillors criticised the idea behind the lifestyle, saying it is “more George Orwell than living."

Salford is facing major housing problems across the city with rising demand for accommodation.

It also has a growing student population, with around 30,000 people currently studying at Salford University, a figure set to climb in the next few years.

Salford council has tried to address its housing issues by building more social housing and creating regeneration plans for the city to deliver thousands of new homes, such as the £2.5 billion Salford Crescent masterplan.
