Pitso Mosimane parts ways with Iranian side Esteghlal FC over unpaid wages

Renowned South African coach Pitso Mosimane has officially parted ways with Iranian top-flight club Esteghlal FC.

Mosimane's departure is effective immediately, as he's cited unresolved salary disputes that have also affected his technical team.

Mosimane's backroom staff, including Maahier Davids, Musi Matlaba, Kabelo Rangoaga, and Kyle Solomon, were similarly impacted by the club's financial issues.

In a statement, Mosimane's management team, MT Sports Marketing & Management, confirmed the decision.

"Despite several opportunities to resolve the matter - beginning with initial discussions with the former CEO of the club last year, followed by a formal default notice issued on 1 January 2025 - Esteghlal FC failed to address the issue," the statement read.

After the notice, Mosimane and his team extended a 15-day deadline, in line with FIFA regulations, allowing the club's new CEO and board time to familiarise themselves with the situation. However, the club failed to meet the deadline.

"Coach Pitso Mosimane and his technical team are still owed more than two months' salaries," the statement continued.

Under his stewardship, Esteghlal secured a vital AFC Champions League draw against Al Ahli FC in Saudi Arabia - a club Mosimane had previously helped return to the Saudi Pro League.

Domestically, Esteghlal currently sits 11th in the Persian Gulf Pro League standings, having lost just three of their 10 league matches under Mosimane's guidance. The club has also advanced to the next round of the Iranian Cup.

The statement concluded by confirming that "the appropriate processes will be followed to resolve this matter".
