Bulls end Cape Town URC hoodoo with one-point win over Stormers

The Bulls have finally ended their Cape Town Stadium hoodoo as they beat the Stormers 33-32 in a ding-dong United Rugby Championship (URC) clash on Saturday in front of a crowd of 47,000 fans.

The Bulls got off to the perfect start on a blistering hot day which started with Cameron Hanekom making metres from the Stormers' kick-off as he busted through several tackles.

The visitors recollected a Rudy Paige kick-ahead as play moved to the left, where Sergeal Petersen got close to the line before finding Cobus Wiese, who crossed over for an unconverted try.

The Stormers, however, slowly started to come into the game and were rewarded with a penalty near half-way, which Jurie Matthee used to set up a line-out close to the Bulls' line.

Although the visitors dealt with the maul efficiently, the Stormers made metres on the right through Ben-Jason Dixon. With the Bulls' defence scrambling, Frans Malherbe was the benefactor of space close to the line, crashing over near the right-hand upright. Matthee added the extras to give the Stormers a 7-5 lead in the 12th minute.

The Bulls took a 12-7 lead in the 19th minute, as prop Jan-Hendrik Wessels barged his way over under the posts for a converted try after Petersen had collected a Willie le Roux kick-ahead down the left wing before the Bulls forwards moved play infield, launching several attacks close to the line.

David Kriel extended their lead off the tee to 15-7 in the 30th minute after the Stormers were caught offside from a Bulls scrum.
