Piccadilly tram stop closed ahead of Man City game after woman attacked

One of the city centre's busiest tram stops was closed this evening after a woman was attacked. Manchester City fans and commuters were hit with travel disruption after the Piccadilly station Metrolink was cordoned off.

The Blues take on Sparta Prague in the Champions League, with kick-off at 8pm. However, trams heading towards the Etihad Stadium and Ashton did not stop or pick up passengers at the stop from just before 6pm until 7:45pm.

Police blocked the platform off as they began enquiries into the assault of a woman which happened at around 5:50pm. A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing at this time. No arrests have been made.

The Bee Network apologised on social media for the inconvenience. At 7:45pm they said: "The outbound tram platform at Piccadilly has now reopened and normal service will resume in both directions. Thank you for your patience.."
