Phillies name Rob Thomson manager with two-year contract

The Philadelphia Phillies are removing the interim tag from manager Rob Thomson's job title, signing him to a two-year contract for the 2023 and '24 seasons, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced Monday.

Thomson, who took over after Joe Girardi was fired in June, led the Phillies to a 65-46 record and the franchise's first postseason appearance since 2011.

Philadelphia, the sixth seed in the National League playoff field, swept the NL Central champion St. Louis Cardinals in two games to advance to the Division Series against the NL East champion Atlanta Braves.

«I could not be prouder of the group of players, coaches and staff that have made this all possible,» Thomson, 59, said in a statement. «This is a great group, one that has shown resiliency and overcome adversity all season to get us where we are today. I am honored and humbled to continue as manager of this club.»
