Phillies fire Girardi; Sarnia, Ont.'s Thomson named interim manager
The Joe Girardi era is over in Philadelphia.
The Phillies fired their manager on Friday after a 22-29 start to the season with the team 12.0 games behind the New York Mets in the National League East.
The Phillies have relieved Joe Girardi of his duties as manager today. Bench coach Rob Thomson has been named interim manager for the club through the end of the 2022 season. In addition, coaching assistant Bobby Meacham was also relieved of his duties. pic.twitter.com/lVL60RrSnJ
Girardi, 57, was in his third season as Phillies manager. The team missed the playoffs in both of his first two years in charge. He finishes his tenure with a combined record of 132-141 (.484).
Sarnia, Ont. native Rob Thomson will serve as interim manager through the end of the season.
Coaching assistant Bobby Meachem was also terminated.
