Philippe Clement full of Rangers positivity as new boys excite and Jack Butland's lack of action a relief

Philippe Clement was immune to the second half nervousness that spread throughout Hampden as the Rangers boss insists Jack Butland was a virtual spectator during their 2-1 win over Motherwell.

Goals from Cyriel Dessers and new signing Vaclav Cerny handed the Belgian his first win of the season, although Robin Propper's debut was slightly marred by an own goal that drew the Steelmen level. A flat second half almost saw the three points slip away as a late Jack Butland stop prevented Zach Robinson from firing home a leveller.

But Clement was all about the positives as Rangers began life away from Ibrox at their temporary Hampden base. And winning was the main thing after dropping two points at Tynecastle last week and not offering Celtic the opportunity to pull further ahead when they take on Hibs at Easter Road on Sunday. “It was well deserved and we wanted to give the fans a really good afternoon in their first visit to Hampden," he said.

"We wanted to score more goals and we had enough chances for that and a few good saves or shots blocked. But I think it’s a really positive game and from the first minute we took the game and created chances in the first minute and the fans were directly behind the team, like they always do in those circumstances so it’s a positive afternoon so early in the season.

“It’s about working on things, explaining things and doing things together and we started with two players who are just in the building but understand the game and what you want to do. I saw a lot of positive things from our two signings.

“That’s why we got Vaclav here. That’s the idea to strengthen the squad and get players in with quality and experience next to our young boys who also had a really good game, like Connor
