Phil Jones makes major announcement after ending Man United playing career

Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has announced his retirement from football - 12 months after leaving the club.

The 32-year-old has been without a team since leaving Old Trafford at the end of the 2022/23 campaign. He hadn’t played a game for 12 months prior to his exit due to injury but had not officially announced his retirement.

Jones now seems to have done just that, by announcing that he is looking to get into coaching. He started his A license in coaching back in September and has now confirmed that he achieved that.

His social media activity shows that he was also part of the coaching set-up for United’s U18s last season. The team won the U18 title as well as the Premier League Cup.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Jones confirmed his retirement from playing for the first time. "My career finished shorter than I would have liked," he said.

"[I am a] glass half full. [I have] completed my A licence and I want to get out there and challenge myself in coaching. Ultimately I want to take charge of a team. I am determined to get there."

Jones arrived at United from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2011. In his 12 years with the club he made a total of 229 appearances, winning one Premier League title, one FA Cup, one League Cup, and a Europa League title.

The defender came up through the youth team at Blackburn and made 40 first team appearances for the club. His performances earned him a move to Old Trafford and the rest is history.
