Phil Jones' devastating final Man United training session and what left him in tears

After more than a decade at Manchester United, Phil Jones couldn't help but cry when he realised his Old Trafford career was over.

The retired star - who made 229 appearances for the Red Devils between 2011 and 2023 - spent almost two years out of action due to injury before launching a comeback in 2022. And despite looking forward to a comeback under Erik Ten Hag, Jones' dream was crushed after he revealed the agony of his final training session at Carrington.

Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Jones detailed how he went into the 2022/23 pre-season fully intending to be a part of Ten Hag's plans. The defender even changed his summer holiday plans numerous times so that he'd have the facilities to train and recover properly, but his hopes were derailed almost instantly after joining up with the rest of the squad.

"Came back first day really excited, Erik ten Hag's come in, fresh start," he said, explaining how positive he felt before tragedy struck. "We were just doing a little warm up, and I kid you not, I couldn't pass the ball with my right foot. . .I just wanted the world to swallow me up, because I'm thinking,'This manager's come in, and I can't go in from training 20 minutes into the session.'"

Jones detailed how he became more proficient using his left foot, but it wasn't long before he told the physios: "This is my last training session." It was another year before his retirement was made official, and Jones spent the whole 2022/23 campaign on United's books, but he was true to his word in that he didn't
