Phil Foden gives stance on his best position after Gareth Southgate questioned his Man City role

Phil Foden has a simple aim when it comes to his best playing position - to just be the best player in the Premier League.

Foden's position has been the subject of a fierce debate this week after England manager Gareth Southgate insisted he can't play the forward in a central role because he doesn't play there for Manchester City.

When Foden has impressed in central areas this season, it has been when drifting inside from a wide position, with Kyle Walker covering his right-wing role. Foden played a similar role for England against Scotland, scoring the opening goal in a 3-1 win when drifting inside the channels and turning in Walker's shot.

In the past, Foden has said he wants to play centrally and says he has 'felt alive' when playing in that 'inside winger' position, like in the 1-0 win over Newcastle last month. Now, he says he is happy playing anywhere as long as he keeps improving.

"Personally, I want to be one of the best players in the Premier League," he told Football Focus. "Try and show people what I can do - whether that's in that central role I played against Newcastle or out wide. I want to get a run of games, get back in the flow and show people what I'm about. That's my aim."

Asked about Southgate's comments after the Scotland game, Foden offered a diplomatic answer to Sky Sports, saying: "It's hard to say where I like to play. Obviously I see myself as a threat on the wings and also coming inside.

"Today I was right-winger but I got to drift inside a lot more to the central areas. I enjoyed that role today and hopefully I
