Pep Guardiola 'completely agrees' with Gareth Southgate over Phil Foden position for Man City

Pep Guardiola is in complete agreement with Gareth Southgate over his controversial comments regarding Phil Foden this week.

Southgate had suggested he wouldn't play Foden in a central position for England because he doesn't play there for Manchester City, adding that there 'must be a reason' for that, and to 'ask Pep' why that was. Southgate also highlighted that Foden's performances this season in central areas have come in a system where he drifts in from the right wing.

Foden played a similar role for England against Scotland on Tuesday, scoring the opening goal and looking impressive again. After the game, he said he was willing to play wherever he was asked, even if he repeated that his ambition is to play more in central areas as he 'feels alive' there.

Foden also said this week that his aim was to be the best player in the Premier League, whatever position he plays in, telling Football Focus: "Personally, I want to be one of the best players in the Premier League.

"Try and show people what I can do - whether that's in that central role I played against Newcastle or out wide. I want to get a run of games, get back in the flow and show people what I'm about. That's my aim."

In response to Foden's claim and also Southgate's comments, Guardiola said he agreed with the England manager that Foden still has much to learn when it comes to the defensive side of playing in midfield.

"You can't be one of the best without that mentality to say you want to be the best, you need targets to climb. Everything starts when you believe in that," Guardiola began, before addressing
