For years Pep roulette was a regular weekend Premier League staple.

Manchester City under Guardiola would regularly rotate and picking a starting XI each week became a difficult task. That changed into something more settled in recent seasons but there is still an element of guesswork when trying to name a City side.

This term City are unbeaten yet there is a feeling they are yet to click, as is so often the case early in the campaign. Injuries to Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne plus the easing in of Phil Foden have meant questions in midfield and attack while the defence has been reasonably settled if short of clean sheets.

City's best XI right not probably looks less impressive than it did before the September international break, although the standard of opposition has been considerably higher. Arsenal, Newcastle and Fulham all sit in the top eight while Brentford have scored inside the opening two minutes for four matches in a row.

Guardiola has largely trusted the same players, and when someone has come in it is rare that they have made such an impression that they have made it impossible for them not to start. Kyle Walker has struggled as a starter and substitute so far, while John Stones still isn't at the level he was a few seasons ago where he could drop in.
