Peter Wright and wife ‘angry’ with Michael van Gerwen as second darts star pokes nose into marriage
A second darts player has aimed a cheeky dig at Peter Wright's relationship with wife Joanne after Michael van Gerwen's quip supposedly angered them.
Van Gerwen caught the attention with his comments about Wright "talking c***" after both reached the quarter-finals of the World Championship this week. He suggested his rival is vocal in the media because he's "not allowed an opinion at home".
Now his fellow Dutchman Vincent van der Voort has doubled down on that claim - and revealed that Mrs Wright was not best pleased with van Gerwen's comments. Speaking on the Darts Draait Door podcast, he said (via Darts News): "I don't think Mrs Wright is too happy with those statements from Michael. And neither is Peter himself.
"But it does often come across that way in their relationship that he has nothing to say at home. I do know that he still gets pocket money. Well, if that's the case, you're not the boss at home. I can tell you that. So I guess it's true."
Having been a regular on the PDC circuit since 2007, Van der Voort is familiar with both Wright and Joanne, who is regularly seen supporting 'Snakebite' on tour and stylising his iconic Mohican before games.
He claims "she's not the easiest" to deal with, continuing: "I did an exhibition with him and then you have to sit on a stage to hand out autographs to everyone. She then just stood behind him to keep an eye out.
"She's not the easiest, but maybe he just needs that too. Maybe he has a hard time with money and that's why he gets pocket money."
Van Gerwen had taken issue with Wright's suggestion that his upcoming opponent Callan Rydz was favourite to win the whole tournament. He put the comment down to an attempt at playing mind games.
