Peter Schmeichel has pundits in stitches with Manchester United Champions League prediction

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was defiant in claiming Ralf Rangnick's side can win the Champions League this season — but fellow pundits Jamie Carragher, Micah Richards and Thierry Henry laughed at his remark.

United aren't in European action until next Wednesday, and have been cast as outsiders to win their fourth European crown with Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and PSG among the favourites to win the competition.

They rectified a slow start to the group stages earlier this season to coast through to the last-16, where they face La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.

As City, PSG, Real Madrid and Sporting kicked off the round of Champions League fixtures, the legendary shot-stopper was a virtual guest on CBS' coverage and was asked to examine United's chances.

Richards asked him: “Peter, do you honestly believe that Manchester United can win the Champions League? Be honest with me now, no messing around.”

After a delay, Schmeichel replied: “Yes. What kind of a question is that?”

"What kind of an answer is that?" Carragher quipped before the studio pundits laughed, clearly believing Ralf Rangnick's side have very little chance in the competition based on recent form.

United have already bettered their showing last season after they were dumped out in the group stage following defeats to PSG, RB Leipzig and Istanbul Basaksehir.

Elsewhere, PSG and City gained first-leg advantages with 1-0 and 5-0 wins over Madrid and Sporting respectively.
