Peter Odemwingie, a West Brom hero & the unravelling transfer

And so the social forum which was to cause him so much grief, ended up underlining Peter Odemwingie's status at West Bromwich Albion.

At around the same time Romelu Lukaku signed for Everton, Odemwingie's move to Cardiff was confirmed.

And then came half an hour which was to exacerbate Odemwingie's final few months perfectly.

As Lukaku prepared to begin his new adventure, the 'good luck' tweets poured in from Albion players.

Good-natured, sincere and a clear indication of how the Belgium international was regarded in the Albion dressing room.

Odemwingie? Nothing evident from his former colleagues - certainly not on the 'public' front of Twitter.

Quite a few Albion supporters passed on their best wishes. Some wished him good riddance.

And then came those in between - happy to see him gone, but regretful that his career had taken this path of self-destruction and angst.

Indeed.

We've poured over the rights and wrongs regarding last January.

Odemwingie got it wrong. But then Albion didn't exactly come out of it with any credit either.

You almost wish somebody, somewhere had reined him in and said 'Peter...no more, just leave it'.

The last few months could have been so different.

Some days before that fateful journey to Loftus Road, Albion informed Odemwingie they would rather keep him for the rest of the season - but would grant him an exit this summer on the basis that his value would drop due to his contract.

But he was insistent.

After the QPR fiasco, Odemwingie made contact with Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace and made a personal apology. Bridges weren't quite yet rebuilt, but the foundations were back in place.

This will surprise many, but that was the point where a new contract - a one-year extension - was spoken about.
