Peter Lawwell gushes over Brendan Rodgers' Celtic return as he relishes reuniting with 'proven winner'

Peter Lawwell says “proven winner” Brendan Rodgers will ensure Celtic continue to drive forward as the Parkhead chairman hailed the Irishman as the “outstanding choice” to succeed Ange Postecoglou in the Hoops hottest.

The 50-year-old Irishman returns to the east end of Glasgow where he won back to back trebles and set them well on their way to a third domestic clean sweep before leaving for Leicester City. The shock manner of his departure caused outrage among the Celtic legions but Rodgers is now back at the helm of his boyhood heroes.

Lawwell’s role at the club has changed from chief executive when he worked with Rodgers previously and their relationship was said to have become strained over a frustration in the transfer market. But, now as chairman, he admitted he can’t wait to work the Irishman again following his appointment on a three-year deal.

Lawwell told the club website: “Through the process of identifying the new Celtic manager, it was clear that Brendan was the outstanding choice and we are absolutely delighted that we have appointed him on a long-term contract.

“We wanted a proven winner and that’s what Brendan is, and myself and everyone else at the club look forward to working with him again to continue to drive Celtic forward. He is someone who knows the club so well and has experience of the huge challenges at Celtic, domestically and in Europe. Brendan is well aware of what it takes to succeed in this role and we know he is delighted to be back with us.

“Brendan is a top-quality manager. He has delivered before for Celtic and we are sure through his many qualities, he will do so again.”
