Peter Drury annoys me but his commentary for Liverpool vs Man City at two key moments was surprising

The beauty of matches like this, the big ones, is the simplicity of them.

Boil it down and this is two behemoths of English, European, and world football across the past decade fighting it out on the pitch. It's Pep vs Klopp, it's a battle for the Premier League title advantage they so demand. It's emotional purity, unbridled.

Very little can match the spectacle, even less can compete with the atmosphere of a game of this standing. It doesn't need to be hyped, it itself is the hype.

Yet, for viewers in England watching Sky Sports, there is a consistent drone that attempts to fire up each moment like the last regardless. Showering each molecule of the event with exposure and fanfare that often isn't needed.

Perhaps as far flung from the shouting of Martin Tyler of Sergio Aguero's goal against Queen's Park Rangers in 2012, we have the paintbrush voice of Peter Drury to guide us through the action now.

Drury, who replaced Tyler as the lead commentator for the games that matter, not diluting himself down to smaller games and only taking the grandstand blockbusters, is an increasingly divisive man. His clips from the past have elevated his coverage standing to the elite of TV commentary, but his first full season hasn't gone as smoothly as, say, Erling Haaland's did last year.

There was always an element to Drury of mastering the big moments in a way few others could, or few others tried. His descriptive monologues providing memorable backdrops to the images of bygone years that we can hear. Now, he's just a bit annoying on occasion.
