Pep Guardiola might have finally found Sergio Gomez's best position at Man City

Sergio Gomez was a right-winger signed by Manchester City to play at left-back, so his first season went exactly as should probably have been expected.

Some bright flashes early on, especially in the Champions League group stage, were undone by a calamitous evening at Southampton in the Carabao Cup in January where his half-time substitution was cheered by the travelling fans. After that night, Gomez wasn't seen again until the Premier League title was won.

A useful summer at the under-21 Euros saw Gomez win the Golden Boot playing back on the wing, and he was used in attack for City in pre-season. An assist off the bench before the international break reminded Pep Guardiola of his attacking qualities, but Gomez faces the same issue many fringe players do at City. There just aren't enough opportunities to play him there regularly.

Gomez certainly isn't going to displace Jack Grealish on the left wing, and Jeremy Doku showed something new and exciting at West Ham. So after his step forward against Fulham, he was back to square one a game later.

It was a surprise to see him in the starting XI against Red Star, and an even bigger one to see him back at left-back. He had made steps forward on the wing, but was now being asked to return to the position where he has never quite looked at home.

Except he wasn't, with Gomez actually asked to replicate Kyle Walker's recent role on the left. Walker has been patrolling the entire right flank at the start of the season, allowing Bernardo Silva or Phil Foden on the right wing to drift inside as a second number ten. From the start, Gomez
