The joy of Kevin De Bruyne's return to the starting XI was curtailed just 23 minutes into the contest as the Belgian was withdrawn through injury. Haaland thought he'd grabbed the headlines with two first-half goals and yet his boss somehow upstaged him with a rather public dressing down. It wasn't the quietest of nights at Turf Moor.

De Bruyne injury aside, City's short trip to East Lancashire could not have gone much better. And yet, amidst the chaos, Guardiola's transfer plans became clearer.

After Joao Cancelo was omitted from the squad to face Arsenal in the Community Shield five days prior to City's clash with Burnley, Guardiola refused to comment on whether the former Bayern Munich loanee would be part of his plans this season. His absence from the travelling party on Friday spoke volumes.

Guardiola's tendency to play with four centre-backs last season meant it was always going to be tough for Cancelo to work his way back into the manager's plans, though the City boss reverted to type on Friday night. Kyle Walker, himself subject to transfer interest from Bayern, started on the right of a back-four, with Lewis drafted in on the left.
