Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta disagree on rule change after Arsenal beat Man City

Pep Guardiola warned about the consequences of extending football matches after Manchester City conceded an equaliser in the 101st minute against Arsenal.

Eight minutes were added on in the second half at Wembley under new refereeing directives to drive out time wasting in the game, and after a clash of heads in that time required more stoppages Leandro Trossard's drive was deflected in long after matches are usually finished. Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri both missed in the subsequent shootout to see the Gunners victorious.

Guardiola had already suggested before the game that adding extra time on was not the solution it was being hailed as, and was seen speaking to the official when eight went up on the board on Sunday. The City manager said afterwards that too much time had been added on in a change that has not been agreed with players and coaches, joking that everyone would be playing overnight in high-scoring matches.

"It was annoying but we have to get used to it. I had the feeling, not because we were winning 1-0, but that not much happened to extend it for eight minutes," he said.

"It's a good question for the international board and people because they don't consult with managers and players and we have to accept it with this amount of games. Now the games will be 100 minutes. Nothing happened today and there was eight minutes.

"They extend for goals. If you score 4-3 you put 45 seconds for seven goals, tomorrow morning at 9am I am [still] here playing."

Mikel Arteta can count Guardiola as a close friend after serving as his assistant for over three years before taking the Arsenal job, and the two share similar footballing beliefs.
