People told 'lock your doors' as police rush to street following serious incident

People were reportedly told to remain indoors as police descended on a residential street following a serious incident on Sunday (February 16).

Officers raced to the incident in Moreton, Merseyside, to reports of domestic abuse at a property. Upon arrival, a man could be seen at the downstairs window threatening a woman, who was holding a baby, with a knife.

Officers were unable to get into the house and following discussions with force negotiators the woman and the baby came out of the address at 12.05pm, both were physically unharmed, but were taken to hospital as a precaution.

People living nearby said around 13 police cars descended on the street as well as ambulances as they were told to remain indoors, the ECHO reports.

The man then barricaded himself in the house and threatened to harm police officers and police dogs, and threw missiles at the police dogs. During the incident a baton round was used when the man came out of the house and he returned inside.

At 12.49pm officers were able to persuade the man to leave the address. He was taken to hospital where he is being treated for self-inflicted cuts to his arm. Following the incident, a 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of affray, common assault, threats to kill and criminal damage

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said a voluntary referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and at this stage said they are not able to comment further. One resident spoke of their shock about what had happened.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: "I was upstairs, then I looked out the window and saw all the police turn up. They told us to lock our doors and stay inside. It was mad. I don't know what's gone on."
