People smuggler jailed after Vietnamese woman found stuffed inside car's dashboard

This is the shocking moment Border Force staff found a Vietnamese woman crammed inside the hollowed-out dashboard of a car at a Eurotunnel terminal in France.

The woman was pictured sat down with her knees in the air and her head behind the car's glove box. The Home Office said she was found 'wedged inside a tiny, custom-built hideaway' which had been created behind the Vauxhall Vectra's engine.

People smuggler Jozef Balog, 33, from Constable Street in Gorton, Manchester, has now been jailed over what the Home Office described as 'a truly shocking case'.

The shoeless woman, wearing jeans and a jumper, was freed unharmed from the car, which had been modified with parts removed to create the cramped void.

"Shocking photos captured by officers show the woman wedged inside a tiny, custom-built hideaway behind the Vauxhall Vectra's glovebox," said the Home Office in a statement after the case.

The British-registered car was intercepted by Border Force staff at the UK Control Zone in Coquelles, northern France, in June 2022.

At Canterbury Crown Court on Tuesday, Slovakian national Balog was jailed for two-and-a-half years for assisting unlawful immigration. Balog said the Home Office, claimed to be returning to his home in Manchester after visiting relatives in his home country at the time.

"When searching the front passenger side, Border Force officers noticed the carpet was further forward into the footwell than expected," added the Home Office statement.
