Pedestrian died days after 'reckless' cyclist crashed into him on Wilmslow Road, trial hears

A man died days after a cyclist who had been seen riding 'aggressively and recklessly’ crashed into him, a trial has heard.

Ian Roland Gunn, 56, was hit by cyclist Cornelius De Bruin on Wilmslow Road, in Didsbury, on June 20, 2020. He was taken to hospital but sadly died eight days later. Mr De Bruin has been charged with causing bodily harm by ‘wanton or furious driving’ following Mr Gunn's death, which he denies.

The opening day of his trial at Bolton Crown Court was shown an eight-minute CCTV video, which showed Mr De Bruin riding his bike through Barlow Moor Road.

The footage showed De Bruin running a red light at the junction of Barlow Moor Road and Palatine Road, and eventually turning into Wilmslow Road. It also showed Mr Gunn entering and exiting a Tesco Express in the area before crossing Wilmslow Road, when he was struck by Mr De Bruin.

Witnesses told the trial how Mr De Bruin was seen riding his bicycle at a 'fast' pace. Peter Clare, who was driving his Land Rover when he was overtaken by Mr De Bruin in the lead-up to the crash, estimated he was going at least '20 mph' described how De Bruin was sat up on the bike while peddling and 'he was going very fast.'

Mr Clare told the court that he could 'remember thinking if any one steps out' they would collide with Mr De Bruin, and said 'before I could even finish my thought, he had already hit the chap.'

Other witnesses described a ‘screeching’ sound when they heard Mr De Bruin brake upon seeing Mr Gunn. One witness said that both Mr Gunn and Mr De Bruin tried to avoid each other and that the latter had turned his steering wheel ‘90 degrees’ in order to steer away from the
