Paul Scholes vs Mikel Arteta: Arsenal boss called a ‘disgrace’ for antics

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has torn into Mikel Arteta for the Spaniard’s touchline conduct when his former team and Arsenal clashed over the weekend.

United fell to a disappointing 3-1 defeat to their old rivals the Gunners in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off.

The result leaves the Red Devils’ top four hopes hanging by a thread having won just once in their last five Premier League games.

Nuno Tavares, Bukayo Saka and Granit Xhaka were all on the scoresheet to give Arsenal the victory, but the win wasn’t secured without controversy…

Initially VAR had ruled out a goal by Eddie Nketiah for an offside call. However, when ruling out the goal, the referee was advised to check for a potential foul by Alex Telles in the build-up and, in doing so, awarded a penalty.

What angered Scholes, though, was Arteta’s behaviour whilst this was all kicking off…

As the referee Craig Pawson walked off the pitch to check the monitor, Arteta could be seen angrily gesturing in the direction of the official, before following him to the monitor and then raising his arms above his head in complaint – which Scholes believed was an attempt to gee up the crowd.

“I didn’t really think of the foul, to be honest,” Scholes told Premier League Productions.

“That brings into question whether it’s a clear and obvious error, which is the only reason it should go to the VAR.

“It’s a coming together, of course it is. I think Arteta is a disgrace there. He shouldn’t be allowed to do that.

“If you see it again, he actually goes to the crowd to try and influence the referee a little.

“All the players around them as well. That shouldn’t be allowed but it’s a little bit clumsy from Telles.”
